Today, Nov. 15th, 2011, at the Manship School of Mass Communication, Chris Mooney and Everett Young discussed the increased incivility and political polarization in American politics, in their search to understand “why” the Left and Right in the United States are unable to agree on factual reality. Mooney, a science journalist, and Young, a Doctor of Political Science, discussed the denial of reality, including scientific realities such as climate change, in the context of “motivated reasoning,” a psychological process that promotes self-serving and defensive biases. @FromTheLabBench live-tweeted this talk.
